our story

Jen Amaral created bean 13 out of her love for coffee and desire to support the fair and direct trade industries. Her mission is to provide ethically sourced coffee of superior taste and quality.

Why 13? 13 represents new beginnings and great fortune. Both Jen and her husband, Kevin, were born on the 13th, began dating on the 13th and were married on the 13th.

It’s only fitting to begin this new journey with lucky number 13. Jen’s wish is to share this luck with you, as you start your day, gather with friends, doing what makes you happy in life.

direct trade

Direct trade is when a buyer deals directly with a supplier, cutting out the middlemen. Why is direct trade important in the coffee world? It gives us the advantage of knowing exactly where our coffee is coming from. Both buyer and supplier have the ability to build a relationship that’s mutually beneficial. This reassures us that the farm is operating ethically and gives farmers the power to negotiate fair wages.

fair trade

When you buy a fair trade product, you can rest assured that the product meets high ethical standards. With fair trade coffee, suppliers must prove they’re operating under safe conditions and are protecting the environment. Additional money must also be used to empower their communities. Fair trade is not the cheapest way to source coffee, but it allows us to help communities across the globe make sustainable wages in a safe environment.
